What does a day on this trip look like?
Guided sights in the morning, a long café afternoon among locals, then your desk for the sessions you trade. Vietnam is UTC+7, so the markets that matter open after lunch.
Hoan Kiem wakes up
Tai chi, badminton and line dancing round the lake before work.
Out with your guide
Old Quarter, a trek or a cruise stop. Back by early afternoon.
Café hours
Egg coffee, a plastic stool, your phone on the Asian close. Watch the street.
London
At your desk. Partner off to a cooking class or a massage.
New York
US data and the open. Bia hơi on the corner first, if you like.
Times move an hour earlier from late March, when London and New York change their clocks. Live converter in our forex hours in Vietnam guide.
Where do you go each day?
Each day has one guided plan, then free hours with a café we like and a look at how people here live and spend now. Green is your free time, gold is local life, purple is your desk.
Day1Arrive, then a first lap of the lake
Hanoi · overnight Hanoi
Private pickup at Noi Bai Airport and about 45 minutes into the Old Quarter. Settle in, then an easy walk with your guide to find your bearings: the lake, the red bridge and the streets you will use all week.
Egg coffee at Cafe Giang, the family café that has served it since 1946. Up a narrow corridor, low stools, a good first lesson in how slowly Hanoi drinks coffee.
Walk Ha Trung street, where the gold shops and money changers sit side by side. Hanoians still save in gold rings and bars, and the queue outside on a big day is a sentiment indicator of its own.
New York from 20:30 if you want it. Most people sleep off the flight.
Day2Down to the bay, screens off
Hanoi → Ha Long Bay · overnight on the cruise
Private car on the expressway to Ha Long (about 2.5 hours) and on board by lunch. Kayak through a cave lagoon in the afternoon and watch the sun drop behind the karsts from the top deck.
Coffee on the sundeck while the boat moves between the islands. Nothing to check, nowhere to be.
The floating fish and oyster farms you pass belong to families who once lived on the water full time. Ask the crew how the bay changed when the villages moved ashore.
Cruise Wi-Fi is patchy out on the bay, so this is your no-chart night by design. Want a quick look at a position? We can add a 4G router.
Day3Sunrise on deck, back to the city
Ha Long → Hanoi · overnight Hanoi
Tai chi on deck at sunrise, a cave visit, brunch as the boat turns for port. Car back to Hanoi, at your hotel by mid-afternoon.
A lakeside café on West Lake (Tay Ho), where Hanoi's young professionals and expats bring laptops. Good Wi-Fi, quiet tables, the lake in front.
At dusk the bia hơi corners fill up: fresh draught beer at a few thousand đồng a glass, office workers on plastic stools arguing about football and land prices.
London is already running when you get back. New York from 20:30 at your hotel desk.
Day4Up into the mountains
Hanoi → Sapa · overnight Sapa
Morning limousine van up the expressway to Sapa, about 5.5 hours with a stop. Check in by early afternoon at a hotel we picked for fibre and a real desk.
A terrace café above the Muong Hoa valley. Order hot ginger tea and watch the clouds come through the terraces.
Hmong and Red Dao women sell textiles in town. Many now run homestays and online shops too; a fast lesson in where tourism money goes in the mountains.
London from 15:00, New York from 20:30 at a desk we have checked for fibre and backup. Skip either one; nothing else on the day depends on it.
Day5Trek the rice terraces
Sapa · overnight Sapa
Guided walk down through the terraces to Lao Chai and Ta Van villages, about 10 km and mostly downhill. Lunch in a village, then the car back up.
Tea in a Ta Van homestay kitchen before the car, then a long coffee in town once you are back around 14:00.
One rice crop a year up here, harvested in September. Ask your guide how families split their time between the fields, homestay guests and kids at school in town.
London from 15:00, New York from 20:30 at a desk we have checked for fibre and backup. Skip either one; nothing else on the day depends on it.
Day6A free day at altitude
Sapa · overnight Sapa
Take the cable car up Fansipan, at 3,143 m the highest peak in Indochina, or have a slow morning. Nothing is booked after lunch.
Pick a view café and stay put. Sapa's cafés are used to people sitting for hours with a laptop and a pot of tea.
Walk to the town market at lunchtime, where village families come in to buy and sell. Prices are written on cardboard and haggling is polite and quick.
London from 15:00, New York from 20:30 at a desk we have checked for fibre and backup. Skip either one; nothing else on the day depends on it.
Day7Back to Hanoi for a last night out
Sapa → Hanoi · overnight Hanoi
Limousine back down to Hanoi, in by mid-afternoon. In the evening a street-food walk with a local: bún chả, bánh cuốn and whatever is good on the night.
Cộng Cà Phê for coconut coffee, or a rooftop café over Hoan Kiem Lake for the view of the motorbike river below.
Your street-food host will show you where office workers eat and what it costs. A full bowl is still cheaper than a coffee in London.
New York from 20:30, or make it a screens-off farewell dinner.
Day8Morning lake, then home
Hanoi → departure
Up early once more for Hoan Kiem at 6 a.m., breakfast, then private car to Noi Bai for your flight.
The city exercising before work: dancing groups, badminton nets strung between trees, old men walking backwards round the lake. Hanoi's best free show.
Which hotels do you stay in?
4★ hotels and resorts as standard, 5★ resorts if you choose them. Every room is checked for a desk, fibre and a backup connection before you arrive, and you see the named hotels before you pay.

City hotel in the Old Quarter
Walk to the lake and the food streets. Desk, fibre and a backup router checked before you arrive.

Overnight cruise cabin
Private cabin with its own bathroom and a window on the bay. Kayaks, a cave stop and dinner on deck.

Mountain hotel with a valley view
Picked for its connection as much as the view: fibre, a desk in the room and heating for winter nights.

Coming with a partner who won't trade? We plan their afternoons while you are at the desk.
Questions before you book.
Can I trade on this trip?
Yes. Six of the seven evenings have a desk for London from 15:00 and New York from 20:30 (Vietnam winter time). The Ha Long cruise night is screens off on purpose, because Wi-Fi at sea is patchy.
When is the best time to go?
September to November and March to May are clearest and most comfortable. December to February is cold in Sapa and often misty on the bay, but quieter and still good with a warm jacket.
Is the Sapa road hard?
No. The expressway and limousine vans have made it about 5.5 hours from Hanoi in a reclining seat, with a stop on the way.
Will I travel with strangers?
No. Every Signature Journey is private, from one traveller, on the dates you choose. It is you, the people you bring, your guide and your driver.
I want a real holiday with no trading. Does this still work?
Yes. Tell us and we drop the desk nights and fill the afternoons instead. You still sleep in rooms with fast, reliable internet for the moment you want to check something.
How do I book, and what if I need to cancel?
Send a brief and you get a written day-by-day plan with named hotels and a price per person within 48 hours. Once you approve it, a 30% deposit holds your dates and the rest is paid when you arrive. Cancellation is free up to 45 days before you travel.
