Can I trade a prop firm account while travelling?

Usually yes. Most firms care about who is trading, not where. Trouble starts when the destination is on a restricted list, or when your logins start to look like someone else is using the account.

Every firm writes its own rules and updates them, so this guide doesn't summarise any one firm's terms. It explains what firms tend to check and why, and gives you the questions to ask your own firm before you travel. Their written answer beats anything you read online, including this page.

Why do prop firms care about IP addresses and devices?

Because the rules they enforce hardest are about identity: one trader per account, no paid "passing services", and no coordinated trading across several accounts. IP addresses and device fingerprints are how they spot those.

What they seeWhat it can look like to themHow to keep it clean
Login from a new countrySomeone else logging inTell support in advance; same device
VPN or rotating IPsHiding location or sharing an accountAsk if VPNs are allowed; don't fake location
A new laptop or phoneA second person on the accountTravel with the devices you normally use
Same IP as another traderCoordinated or copied tradingAvoid shared VPS and shared accounts; mention it if you travel with traders
Restricted countryA compliance problemCheck the list before you book

The last-but-one row matters for group trips. If you trade from the same villa or trading room as other funded traders, you may share a public IP. That's normal on hotel internet, but it's worth a line in your email to support so it isn't a surprise.

Can I use a VPN with a prop firm?

It depends on the firm. Some ban VPNs, some allow them, and many flag logins whose location jumps around. The one thing to avoid everywhere is a VPN that makes it look like you never left home.

The usual reason traders reach for a VPN abroad is security on hotel or café Wi-Fi. A cleaner fix is to avoid open Wi-Fi for trading: use the hotel's wired connection or a hotspot from your own local SIM. Our eSIM and SIM guide for Vietnam covers getting a data SIM on arrival, and trading from Vietnam covers fibre and power backup.

What should I ask my prop firm before I travel?

Five questions cover almost everything: is my destination allowed, can I log in from there, are VPNs allowed, can my EA keep running on a VPS, and will payouts and KYC still work while I'm away.

  1. Destination: "I'll be in Vietnam from [date] to [date]. Is that country allowed?"
  2. Logins: "I'll log in from my usual laptop and phone. Anything I should do so this isn't flagged?"
  3. VPN: "Are VPNs allowed, and if so, under what conditions?"
  4. VPS and EAs: "My EA runs on a VPS in [location]. Is that fine while I log in from abroad?"
  5. Payouts and KYC: "Will a payout request or ID check from abroad cause any issue?"

Keep the reply in your email, not just in a live chat window. If a login is ever reviewed, a dated written answer is the strongest thing you can show.

What time does the daily loss limit reset in Asia?

Many firms reset the daily drawdown at midnight server time, often set to the 17:00 New York close. In winter that's 05:00 in Vietnam and Thailand and 06:00 in Malaysia and Singapore, an hour earlier from 14 March. Check your firm's exact rule: some use a different server time.

This catches people out after a flight. A loss at 23:00 in Da Nang and another at 03:00 count towards the same trading day, because the day doesn't end until 05:00. Session times for each country are in our guides for Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia, and NFP time in Asia has every US jobs release to April 2027.

How should I handle travel days on a funded account?

Treat them as flat days. Close or reduce positions before you fly, don't open new ones in the air or in transit, and trade at smaller size for the first session or two in the new time zone.

  • Inactivity rules: some firms close accounts with no trades for a set number of days. Check the number before a long trip.
  • 2FA: move it to an authenticator app before you leave, so you're not waiting on an SMS from home.
  • Backup access: know how to close a position from your phone if the laptop or Wi-Fi fails.

The full packing and setup list is in trading while travelling: the complete checklist. Nothing here is about which trades to take; it's about not losing an account over logistics.

FAQ

Can I trade my prop firm account while travelling?

Usually yes, as long as the country you travel to isn't on the firm's restricted list and you follow its rules on IP addresses, VPNs and devices. Rules differ between firms, so email support before you go and keep the written reply.

Can I use a VPN with a prop firm account?

It depends on the firm. Some ban VPNs outright, some allow them, and many flag logins whose location jumps around. Never use a VPN to make it look like you're at home; that pattern is what account-sharing checks look for. Ask your firm in writing.

Will logging in from a new country get my prop account flagged?

A new country can trigger a review, especially if it lines up with another account's activity or a different device. Telling support in advance, using your usual laptop and keeping one consistent connection makes a review simple to answer.

Can I run my EA on a VPS while I travel?

Many firms allow a VPS, but then your trades come from the VPS's IP while you log in from somewhere else. Check that your firm allows it, keep the VPS in one fixed location, and don't share it with another trader's accounts.

What time does the prop firm daily drawdown reset in Asia?

Many firms reset the daily loss limit at midnight server time, which is often the 17:00 New York close. That's 05:00 in Vietnam and Thailand and 06:00 in Malaysia and Singapore in winter, an hour earlier from mid-March. Check your firm's exact rule.

Should I tell my prop firm I'm travelling?

Yes. A short email with your dates, destination and the devices you'll use costs nothing, and a written reply is the best evidence you have if a login is reviewed later.

The bottom line

A funded account travels fine if it still looks like you: same devices, an honest location, no VPN disguise, and a written OK from support before you fly. Then check when your trading day resets in the new time zone.
